memorial that not only pays tribute. it actually helps to make us safer. >> whenever there's a loud noise, i've always been one of those people that runs towards the noise, versus away. that's one of the reasons i became a volunteer firefighter. >> erika: scott koen vividly remembers the events of 9/11. the planes that crashed in washington dc, pennsylvania and new york city. scott wanted to do something special to honor those caught up in the terrorist attacks. and so i developed a project called freedom plaza, which was to use the materials from the world trade center, and make a large north american bald eagle out of it, and it's on the size and scale of the statue of liberty. scott designed the memorial to stand where the world trade center towers had fallen. but the city of new york was already developing other plans for the site, and scott's memorial was not destined to be a part of them. then, late one night, he came up with another, even more ambitious idea. >> well, if we're going to use the steel and the aluminum in an eagle we could use some of the steel in a ship. >> erika: sc

crash, but the faa does not believe that's what this is. reports from the scene tell us this may be a natural gas explosion, those flames being fed from videotape a little while ago the intensity of these flames that they are being fed by a large gas line that services the airport. we're told the fire is consuming a residential neighborhood. some aerial views that are wider than others show a wide area in flames, at least a dozen homes on fire. first reports are telling us at least five people have been taken to area hospitals, three of them in credit can condition. you see helicopters there over- - critical condition. you see helicopters there overhead as well. no reports of any deaths, but officials are still trying to assess what's going on there, what's causing this huge fire. windy conditions are also hampering firefighting efforts. this is a neighborhood of homes in san bruno, california, just south of the city of san francisco up in flames. the full extent of the story there still unfolding. >> incredible pictures coming out of that area. we know you'll let us know of any

in this parking area. neighbors pointed the area out to us and we found crime scene tape here as well. here's what police say happened next. >> they were trying to approach him to make contact with him. shots -- a shot was fired and the officer felt that he was in danger at that point and responded to that shot firing several rounds. >> reporter: but what exactly happened is not known for sure. police say the man, 28-year-old owe livier cohen -- olivier cohen was spotted with a rifle. it's unclear if he shot at the officers or that single shot heard was that of cohen shooting himself. still the officer felt the need to protect himself. >> the gunshot was heard by the officers that were responding and at this point everything of that nature is still under investigation by our criminal investigation division and some of those determinations are yet to be made. >> reporter: cohen was pronounced dead at the scene. the officer was not hit. the scene outside the cohen home in germantown friends of the family told us off camera that they have a hard time believing cohen would have attempted to harm a pol

for joining us i'm maureen umeh. >> and i'm will thomas. a husband and wife and a history of problem. tonight they are both dead. how it all unfolded right in front of a federal agent walking his dog. >> reporter: residents on wide water drive in the prince william county were jolted awake just after 7:30 in the morning by the sound of gunfire. francis wily's husband called out to her. >> he told me get down. get the kids. make sure they are in their room. close the door. tell them not to come out. and then there was another shot. >> reporter: a married couple, robert and jennifer bathes, who lived several miles away on erica drive for some reason had driven to this neighborhood in their ford sport utility vehicle. neighbors at the crime scene said a dea agent walking his dogs encountered the couple and saw robert baits holding a gun to his head. he turned the gun towards the unarm agent who backed away. jennifer baits ride to get out of the car and that's when the shots rang out. the agent started shouting loudly enough to shout to his neighbors. >> he was saying why did you kill her, why di

that in their position right now that was used during the shooting, but they are still on the lookout for a 2001 is white buick with d.c. tags. they want anybody in the community to come forward if they saw that vehicle around 13th and u. street or in the 1100 block of gerard street. they're telling us they believe this stems from an argument that happened outside of the funeral yesterday at about 1:00. the chief said they believe there are gang members involved with this. at this point they don't know if the argument stemmed from the funeral as they were mourning young ashley mckay here yesterday afternoon. so at thisit appears as though they are still looking for an additional suspect, possibly two more in this case. they said it was the community that came forward and helped them find this 21-year-old brandon miller that they arrested last night. they still want people to be on the lookout for the 2001 buick from d.c. tags and we'll have the latest on the story as it continues to develop. let's listen real quick to what the police chief and mayor fenty had to say moments ago. >> what happened here on

see changes. it is wednesday morning, september 29th. thanks for being with us. i'm steve chenevey. >> and i'm allison seymour. we are happy you are with us. tucker barnes is in for tony with the latest on this day. and you're scaring me with word of a deluge tomorrow. >> we're comfortable now. temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. we'll start with the satellite and look at that. our motion from south to north, waking up with cloud cover. might be a few rays of sunshine as you head out of the door and the clouds will increase and it looks like we have heavy rain in store. not so much today. i think the evening commute is okay, but into the nighttime and during the daytime tomorrow, a lot of heavy rain around as we have prop cal moisture to the south which is being pulled to the north. at this point we have a flash flood watch for later tonight and into the daytime on thursday. we're talking about the potential for several inches of rain. so the entire viewing area under a flash flood watch. it's not just the washington area. most of the mid-atlantic, right into southern new england

dhindsa. thank you for joining us for fox 5 morning news. we'll have more on that spectacular scene out west but first we want to get a check of our weather with gwen talbert. >> we are getting the reality of being in september versus thursday where we were in the mid-90s which was totally unbelievable. another cool start to the day. yesterday, we didn't do too baddie. we'll show you what we're talking about. what we've got going on right now is just a few clouds across the area. we have the ridge of high pressure some control and that will continue to dominate our weather pattern over the course of the next day or so so we are doing pretty good so far as we start to embark into this weekend. here is a look at where we stood yesterday, temperature- wise. a far cry from that 96 degrees that we had on wednesday. we're into the 80s right now and today we are looking at a high that will bring us about 78 degrees. no shortage of sunshine, gurvir. >> thank you. >>> we do want to look at our top stories and more on that massive fire just south of san francisco that is blamed on a possible gas

the summer like temperatures have been baking. if you got used to it, things are about to change. gwen tolbert is down in the weather center with change. >> talk about one extreme to the other. let's look at what the highs were yesterday because we broke records at a couple of locations. 93 degrees at national airport. 93 at dulles. and that was a record that was broken. and baltimore 91 degrees. well we're a far cry from that as we move through into the course of today. already starting out very much on the cooler side. we currently have 67 degrees at national airport. only 59 degrees at gaithersburg. and we've got 59 at fredericksberg as well. and 68 degrees at annapolis. our live doppler radar showing you we have a little bit of wet weather moving in across the region. and that is something we're going to keep an eye on during the course of the day. a few light sprinkles right now. we'll see that change during the course of the evening hours. and back to the maps. for today, we're talking over cast highs. high of 71 degrees. almost 20 degrees cooler than yesterday and that's the kin
